In Hyderabad, artisans living near the base of Tirumala are preparing to seek a geographical indication tag for their Madhavamala wood carvings. These skilled craftsmen have been creating intricately carved wooden statues of deities like Lord Balaji for more than a century. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will be submitting the application with the help of NABARD. This will be the 20th geographical indication application from Andhra Pradesh, as noted by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha.
